Hilarious. I'm glad this is a rockin Funk song instead of some wistful broadway tune.

http://www.broadjam.com/artists/songs.php?artistID=62291&mediaID=404992

Who's that man with the plan for building an audience for the actors?
Who's that gal making pals with those big symphony benefactors?
Sometimes you might see 'em
Strolling around some well-endowed museum.
You'll know sooner or later,
It's an Arts Administrator.

Take any art that cannot support itself on earned income.
They'll bring the smarts and the heart to help you put on the show and then some.
'Cause you know it ain't easy
Running a 501c3.
Still it's sweeping the nation,
It's Arts Administration.

I've seen 'em balance a budget
With a bake sale benefit.
Between the divas and the details
Any average mortal would quit.

Juggling that governing board
Buying things they can't afford
Driving in an old Accord
('Cause they can't buy a new one).
Getting all their goods in-kind
Starting with the end in mind
They're the best when in a bind.

Even if the muses infused your every breath,
Without their kind you might find
That you're an artist who's starved to death.
You'll need one sooner or later,
It's an Arts Administrator

Friend of every creator,
It's an Arts Administrator.

Greetings from Atlanta

I have been thinking a lot lately about the Midwest, Bloomington and my Arts Admin cohort. I hope you all are doing well and those still in the Midwest--I am sorry to hear about the tortuous snow storm! I am now living in Atlanta, Georiga and we had our "baby" snow storm at the beginning weeks of January. It would have been a bleep on the scene of winter snow falls for those in the Midwest or East coast but for the south it was monumental: 4-5 inches of snow! It was enough to shut down the whole city. I am currently pursuing doctoral work at Georgia State University, located in the heart of Atlanta's downtown, and my school was cancelled for 4 days due to the "snow storm". So, essentially my first days of being a new, green Teaching Instructor were postponed for a week.

I pursue work in communications and a current class on public memory really puts my mind back into the discussions we had during our arts admin classes: the role of the museum in forming public memory- its hegemonic roles, its silences, its approaches, its gatekeepers, its funders. I remember vividly having long debates on elite vs populist art perspectives and these conversations are coming back alive in my public memory class. I wanted to thank everyone again for those discussions and wish everyone well!

Lastly, if anyone is traveling through the Atlanta area send me a holla over FB and I can show you some of the museums within my new city: CNN, the HIGH, Coca-cola, the Margaret Mitchell house, Stone Mountain, and many nice neighborhood galleries!

Happy 2011-Courtney

Florida Living!

Hello Friends!
How is everyone doing? I miss you guys! It's been over a year since I updated everyone. I was waiting for something really exciting to happen...and finally, it did! I accepted a position with BIG ARTS last week, and after a few days of packing (and a grueling 20 hour drive) I am here! BIG ARTS is a jack-of-all-trades arts org on Sanibel Island in SW Florida. They do film, visual art, classical music, jazz, theatre, dance, lectures, etc. They also offer TONS of classes (when I saw the list I joked that it was better than what IU offers! Not really, but it's great).

Our constituency is mostly affluent, retired folks living on the island, in addition to people who come down here to vacation. Part of what makes BIG ARTS fun is that we have a small staff (15 or so), and a massive volunteer corps. It's kind of the cool thing to do on the island--being a volunteer at BIG ARTS. Anyway, a large part of my job will be interacting with and managing the volunteer committees for each of the categories listed above. I will also be managing the new theatre that we've acquired (too long a story to relay here...I may or may not start my own blog about this. If so, I will send a link!)

I'm living in Fort Myers, which is just a little over 10 miles away. I had never seen myself here--my mantra was "chicago chicago chicago." The whole time I was at Campus Art (miss you, Liska!), I was spending a minimum of 30 hours a week looking for a job. If you crunch the numbers, I had been looking for 15 months, completed and mailed over 150 applications, and went through 16 interviews. Needless to say, I'm really happy that the hunt is over.

For those of you still looking (is anyone else still looking?), hang in there. It feels like it will never happen, but it will. I almost sold myself short several times--there were plenty of offers for shamefully low-paying, zero benefits, bottom of the totem pole jobs. My advice is to STICK IT OUT and wait for someone to give you the compensation, and the responsibility, that reflects what you're worth.

Meanwhile, I am doing all of the little things that go along with moving. Becoming a Florida resident, checking out the scene here. I am attending the Fort Myers monthly art walk this evening. Let's hope it doesn't disappoint!

Hope each of you are loving life!
Stay in touch,
Jessica

5 hours in a rental car. 3 hours of training. 5 hours back to Indy.

Just me and the open road.

Anyone else have updates? Good news? Travel plans?

All,

An article I thought might interest you.

And a little update. I'm currently still working at Valparaiso University. I have moved from the Center for the Arts to the Campus-wide Marketing Department. I am now responsible for VU's arts marketing. Quite a challenge in this changing organization! I have wandered a bit from my passion for the visual arts, galleries and museums, but I hope that my career will wander back to the visual arts in the future. Life is always interesting! If any of you are in the Chicago/NW Indiana area and interested in coffee and a chat, I always look forward to hearing from you all!

Lexie

Hope you enjoy the article:

WASHINGTON, DC (AP).- The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced the largest private donation in its history Monday — a $22.5 million gift from Dick and Betsy DeVos to endow a management training program for arts leaders.

Arts organizations have been struggling or even closing their doors in the recession and need expert leadership to survive, Betsy DeVos said. The gift is among the largest ever by the Michigan couple.

"We spend millions and billions of dollars training the most talented artists in the world, and yet we have invested very little historically in actually helping train and prepare their leadership, those who manage and employ them," she said.

The gift will help fund two-year arts management training programs across the country. The center already has trained leaders from more than 400 small to mid-sized groups in New York, Chicago and Washington since 2001. It also hosts fellows each year.

Hello from Houston

Hello,

I have been thinking about (and missing) you all lately. I hope everybody is doing well!

So I don't believe I actually wrote the blog and told everyone I am down here in Texas. We love it. I work in the Education department at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. In particular I work with families - creating resources for them to use at the museum, teaching in the galleries, and even arranging performances (thank goodness for that event planning class!).

My job started last August - so Luke and I left NYC and had a few weeks with family before hauling it down here. Let me know if you all are going to be in town - or if you are thinking of moving here. There is a HUGE arts scene in Houston (that I didn't even really know about) and the economy hasn't been hit as hard.

Write and tell us what you are up to. I would love to hear from everyone.

Best,

t

Anyone going to the Americans for the Arts Conference in June?? I'm debating. Guest speakers Arianna Huffington, Robert Redford, and John Waters are really tempting me...

Anyone in Chicago, DC or Vancouver?

Dear all,

How's it going? Are you all surviving the crazy winter?

I've started working at Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan since 1/4, as a project coordinator. The first half of 2010 I'll be working with Cloud Gate 1 on the new production Listening to the River premiering in March in Taiwan; the second half of 2010, working with Cloud Gate 2 touring in towns and universities in Taiwan focusing on dance education and outreach. With these said, there's no touring abroad of me this year... Though a little disappointed, I'm having fun at work, learning a lot in this big organization. I'll definitely work my butt off to get into the touring team next year so I can go visit you all :)

The good news is, Cloud Gate is touring to North America for three weeks starting from tomorrow. The company will perform at Harris Theatre, Chicago(1/22-23), Kennedy Center, DC(1/29-30), and Cultural Olympiad, Vancouver, Canada(2/5-6). If you happen to be in these three cities and you love Dance, you won't want to miss this!

Miss you lots and lots,
Salina

Make this blog worth my while

Does anyone have a template for soliciting businesses to buy ad space in a handbill/booklet/concert program? It hardly feels useful reinventing something I know exists somewhere. I just want to insert my logo and my good reasons for buying ad space from us. Where can I find this? I will feign interest in buying ads from your organization if you send me one. :)

Thanks in advance to my extremely knowledgeable colleagues & co-conspirators.

News

Hey guys!!! How are you? I miss you all so much! It's been a while since last time I give you updates... (sorry Dr. Rushton and Susan, internship report is still under process... soon, I promise!) And now it's time!

As some of you may know, I had passed my deadline of looking for a job (due to my visa status) so I packed up my stuff and came home two weeks ago. It was a sad decision to leave the US, especially knowing that I won’t be able to see you guys again in a long long time. I wasn’t able to call you guys up individually cause my phone died on me in the very last couple days and everything happened too fast (and there’s too many stuffs to pack… oh man…) that I didn’t even have time to think through everything I should have done before I left. But I do think about all of you all the time, all the good times and hard times we’ve been through together. Thank you all for being great friends in the past two years and four months so I knew at all times that I was not alone.

Being home has been great. I’ve been eating a lot of good food (but I miss bagels, good cheese, good wine, and good beer) and meeting lots of families and friends. I’ve spent some time on the beach breathing the ocean air—yes, the weather has been like summer in the US! (but I miss the gorgeous white snow and the smell of air coming out from the old fashion heater). All have been great, but I miss my life in New York and in Bloomington. BUT, the greatest thing happened yesterday—I got a job offer from Cloud Gate Dance Company!!! I interviewed with them last Tuesday and have been holding on to my cell phone twenty four seven (literally); you all know how painful it is to wait for the phone call. Can’t describe the complicated feelings in my heart right now but I have to let you all know this great news! They’ve offered me a position in the production team and we’ll talk about the details of my responsibilities next week; maybe I’ll be able to be part of the touring team and go visit you guys soon! Keep your fingers cross for me!

I so much wish you are around to give me a hug. Miss you lots and lots. Write me emails at salina.yeh@gmail.com or call me at my Internet phone 917-652-3098 to leave message (address: No. 1-12 Hua-hsing Street, Hualien 970, Taiwan). Give me some updates of your life too, so I know all my friends in the continent on the other side of the world are doing great.

Salina, in Taiwan

Expert help needed

Ok, here is our first "request for expertise" post. I need the knowledge of some visual art folks out there. I have 2 images, that I've found on the internet, that my org would like to use in an educational publication, if we can confirm that they are in fact images of the "Great Wagon Road" (related to the history of Appalachian folk music) and we can track down copyright info for them. Does anyone have resources they standardly use to research images? Or can you place the period/style of art or artist? Thanks! -Sarah

Hello Friends!

Hello Friends - it has been too long! We need to be better about writing to each other - post anything - what you're doing at work that day - I don't care - it's always fun to hear from you all.

I'm still in Washington DC, at the National Council for the Traditional Arts. My job is to assist with the production and logistics of 4 folk and traditional music festivals this season. What this actually means is that I book a LOT of airplane tickets to get stage technicians and sound engineers into our destination cities, and coordinate all of the tech info they need, like stage plots, equipment needs, and schedules, to give them once they're on site. So far, we've done festivals in Butte, Montana; Lowell, Massachusetts; and Bangor, Maine. Our last one will be in Richmond, Virginia, at the beginning of October. We travel out for about a week, but the festivals are just Fri-Sun. I always say that festivals are like summercamp for adults - you make a whole bunch of best friends in a condensed time period. They're good people - the staff is a lot of fun to work with. The office work in the weeks in between gets a bit repetitive, as you go through the same procedure to prepare the artists and staff for each festival, so I tend to live for the weeks of travel. On the academic front, I owe Susan so many update reports, it's embarrassing (soon, I promise!).

Jessica, I looked at that article, and it says Liska is traveling to do the installation the 18-22 - she must be there now! She asked me a few weeks ago to do the museum brochure for Morton Bradley, so I got to learn a little about him. It's still in review for edits among the big folks, though, we haven't reached a final draft. But it's looking good. Liska's colorful words of excitement when I sent it to her really brightened my day :)

On that note, I'm doing more graphic design work all the time, which I really enjoy. IU providing all the new Adobe CS4 software for download to students was a big help to me! My last big project was making light-pole banners, now hanging in 18 locations around the University of Michigan campus (my undergrad). There's a picture on my blog, if you want to see it. (The rest of the blog is lagging a bit - I find the interesting things to write about might be too revealing for the business of wherever I work at the time, and I always feel I owe some loyalty to the organization that employs me, so that's that.) But if you've got graphics projects, send them my way!

My NCTA gig ends in October - so after that I need a new job! So I'm on the hunt yet again....

Hope you're all doing well, and hope to read updates or hear from you all soon, too!

(And if you're in the DC area in the next couple months, let me know!)

all my best wishes,
Sarah

campus art takes the world by storm!

Hello, Friends!
I didn't get a chance to read Clare's last post, so I may be a little out of the loop on what's going on with Arts Admin folk...How is everyone doing? I will put together a more detailed update about what I'm doing once I have a little more to update about. In the meantime, I'm working with Liska at Campus Art and having a lovely time doing it.

We wanted to share this article with you. Campus Art doesn't make the headlines terribly often, so we were proud to get some press!

http://newsinfo.iu.edu/news/page/normal/11848.html

Anyway, I miss you guys. Well, mostly Hu...
Just kidding, I miss all of you!

Stay in touch,
Jessica

SOMEONE needs to update this thing.

Found out today I'm going to be on a panel for a living history conference here in Indy. Mostly focused on Underground railroad re-enactment. I will be sitting alongside Conner Prairie's Guest Experience Manager and a few other local arts admins. Sooo that will be fun.

And if any of you have family, friends, acquaintances that are Indiana principals, they will have received the YA program catalogue this week, edited by yours truly. I mostly worked from last year's template (per my boss's instructions), but it was an interesting challenge using InDesign for the first time. My big excitement now is researching companies that can turn the PDF into a cool digital flip book. The prices range from $20/month to $30/page annually(over $1500 for our catalogue). There seems to be some differences in the services between low range and high range prices. The most expensive have really great keyword search options and options to embed video and audio, but I'm not yet convinced that we need all the bells and whistles. If anyone has suggestions, send them my way.

I would really love to hear from some of you. I will resist my initial thought to list names of people who have yet to blog and just leave it at pleading.

Best,

SH

News from Natalia...

Hello! Masters of the Universe,

A twenty-something artist friend of mine told me about the Etsy website, http://www.etsy.com/, which prompted this post from me.

I've decided to work less this next year and barrel through the rest of the MAAA coursework this next year. That means I'll be looking for an internship soon, too. I plan to work in advocacy for the arts when I complete my degree, so an intership with Americans for the Arts (or similar organization) sounds ideal. Any other options you know about and have some experience with would be greatly appreciated. I am willing to move for the time period, if needed.

I attended the Salt Creek Sundance this past week-end, http://sc.saltcreeksundance.com/. Some of you know that my attendance at the Sundance in the summer of 2007 started me on the path that led me to begin the MAAA program with all of you that fall. I am grateful to that ceremony for many things in my life.

One more thing -I also want to encourage all of you to keep your spirits up, even in these uncertain times. You are a wonderfully talented, funny and intelligent group of young people. I can't wait to see what kind of lives you'll dream up for yourselves!

Take care and keep posting! :)

An update and an NEA document

Hello all,
I am posting some carnivalesque good news, I am employed- there is hope. I will be joining Michelle in Houston come August to work at the
Houston Center for Contemporary Craft as their Curatorial Fellow. Basically, I will get to work under the Curator of Craft on exhibitions and curate exhibitions of my own in the smaller gallery space.

Secondly, I'm working for a few weeks at the City before leaving town. Mainly I've been doing research on applying for an NEA grant (daunting!) and designing public art signage. Several weeks ago I sifted through NEA information and discovered there is a Freedom of Information Act, (FOIA) that would allow me to ask for copies of successful grants similar made by organizations similar to the City. After learning how to request such information I did so. And then I waited, and never heard back assuming that the government would not pull through. Then today in my inbox there it was - two example grant pdf files! I was so excited! And really thought the only people who would understand would be y'all (I'm trying to embrace Texas).

Hope everyone is having a great start to summer!

AW
